Fibromyalgia Pain can be worse in the Winter

Pain can be magnified in the winter months.

I do not like being cold!  Twice in my lifetime I had developed hives on my legs just from the rapid drop in temperature.

As most people that live with Fibromyalgia have learned, we do not do well with fluctuations in temperature.  Pain can be difficult to live with at all times, but combined with cold temperatures, is amplified.

In the cold months, the only way I have found to get warm is in a hot bath of classic-trio-beanie-fringed-scarf-and-glovesEpsom salts, I look forward to my nightly soaks. Not only is it relaxing, but also delivers the magnesium through the skin that the muscles need and assists in a more restful sleep.

I also purchased an electric blanket that I and my huge dog, Lola, and two cats, Mattie and Penny, share. I use it before bed while watching television; otherwise, I would not be able to sleep.

Living with Fibromyalgia, we usually do not sleep well.

It’s important to find a routine that works for you personally. Pain can be worse in the morning if you do not get a restorative  sleep.

Over the years, before I had discovered that blue-green algae is loaded with magnesium, and of the benefits of epsom salts, I had used a low-dose anti-depressant that worked very well for me, to assist in a more sound sleep and pain control.

On some nights, If necessary, I will supplement with melatonin, 3 mg. an hour before sleep.  This can be purchased at the supplement counter.

Pain can be worse for people living with Fibromyalgia as our nerves can misinterpret “cold” as “pain”.   

It can be initiated, too, by behaviors that we aren’t aware of, such as tightening the shoulders to keep warm outside in the cold weather. I find I have to restrain myself from this ongoing habit.

I keep a spare pair of gloves in the car because I despise a cold steering wheel! Not only do my hands feel like ice cubes, pain can be flared up in arthritic hands from the cold. It’s not uncommon to see me driving by with my sleeves pulled over my hands when I cannot find my gloves!

Most Fibro patients find that pain can be worse with the application of ice packs.

When I had gone for Physical Therapy for a knee injury, I preferred warm compresses as opposed to the ice packs that were offered during treatment.

Since I have learned how NSAIDS (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug) can harm the lining of the stomach, I was on a quest to find a natural alternative supplement to replace the  over-the-counter drug I relied on  for pain control.  I would use the ibuprofen on an as-needed basis, but was still unsure of the harm I was doing to myself.
