Yoga can be a Laugh!

The benefits of yoga are taken a step further with the introduction of Laughter Yoga

Laughter Yoga is showing to be instrumental in people becoming healthier!

It is a breakthrough laughter delivery system that enables a person to laugh continuously for 15 to 20 minutes with short breaks of yoga breathing.  It gives you all the benefits of yoga plus the advantages of a mini-workout!

The body responds to unconditional laughter, real or fake!

The benefits of Yoga have been proven, but now combines unconditional laughter, which doesn’t even have to be real, it can be fake; yet, the body responds in a positive way.

Dr. Madan Kataria, a medical doctor from Mumbai, India, popularly known as the “Guru of Giggling” (London Times), is the founder of Laughter Yoga clubs .

 Laughter Yoga Clubs are social clubs, free for all. 

There is no membership fee, no forms to fill, and no fuss.   Laughter Yoga clubs are run by volunteers trained as Laughter Yoga teachers and Laughter Yoga leaders.

The clubs are non-political, non-religious and non-profit and run directly by Laughter Clubs International in India and Laughter Yoga International in the rest of the world.

Clinical research on Laughter Yoga methods, conducted at the University of Graz in Austria; Bangalore, India; and in the United States has proven that laughter lowers the level of stress hormones in the blood and fosters a positive and hopeful attitude.

 The benefits of Yoga are enhanced with laughter.

Scientific research has shown that laughter has a profound impact on the immune system, which influences the course of survival for cancer patients; it is effectively implemented in many Cancer hospitals, helping the patients and their caregivers cope with pain and trauma.

5 Classic Yoga Exercises – these exercises will shift your mood if you give them a chance for at least 10 minutes a day:

• Cell Phone Laughter:  Hold an imaginary cell phone to your ear and laugh.

• Gradient Laughter: Fake a smile, giggle, then laugh slowly and gradually increase in tempo and volume.

• Greeting Laughter:  Greet everybody the way you normally greet (shake hands) and replace words with laughter.

• Hearty Laughter:  Spread your arms up, look up and laugh heartily as you direct your laughter to come straight from your heart.

• Think of a socially awkward situation and laugh at it (shoe laces untied, shaving cream behind your ears, etc.).

***Since I do participate in an over-50 Yoga class, I thought I would also include 5 Laughter Yoga Exercises for Seniors:

• Back Pain Laughter:  Lean forward and put your hand on your lower back, then laugh as if you could not stand back up.

• Conductor Laughter:  Imagine you are a conductor.  Direct an imaginary orchestra with enthusiastic arm movements as you sing any song of your choice – in laughter sounds only (ho ho ho or ha ha ha).

• Ear Wiggle Laughter:  Slowly slide your left hand upward along the left side of your head, slowly going over your head as you say an extended “eeee” sound, then laugh as you wiggle your right ear with your left fingers.  Do the same on the other side.  Repeat a few times.

• Laughter Pill:  Take some laughter pills!  Each pill has a unique effect and makes you laugh and jerk in a peculiar way for just a few seconds.  Try another one as soon as the effects wear off.

• Vowel Movement Laughter:  Have you had your vowel movement today?  Laugh in the tonality of the following sounds:  Eee Eee Eee Eee!  Aye aye aye aye!  Ah ah ah ah!  Ho ho ho ho!  Ooo ooo ooo ooo!  Uh uh uh uh!
