A Constant Pain in the Chest—Costochondritis

A constant pain in your chest may be symptoms of Costochondritis.


If you live with Fibromyalgia and a constant pain in your upper body, be aware of these telltale signs:

    • • Sharp, stabbing pain in the front of the chest.
    • • Ribs that are sore to the touch.
    • • Pain on the left or right side of the chest.
    • • Upper chest pains.
    • • Burning pain in the ribs.
    • • Pain that radiates up the back of the neck and shoulders.
    • • Pain in your chest when you sneeze or cough.
    • • Pain that increases with activity, exertion, or deep breathing.



People with Fibromyalgia tend to develop costochondritis more often.

Men and women performing repetitive movements that strain the chest wall might be considered more at risk of getting Costochondritis. Women may find it uncomfortable to wear a bra, especially underwire bras, which may contribute to or even worsen the symptoms.

For most people, it goes away in six to twelve months; however, for some people, it remains a constant pain, becoming chronic.

Costochondritis typically is more painful in the early stages and does eventually weaken. It also decreases when the movement stops or with quiet breathing and is more painful with deep breathing.

With so much swelling and inflammation in the chest wall, the nerves over-react and muscles turn into tight knots, causing the feeling of a heart attack. With all the muscles and nerves running between the ribs and the chest muscles tightening and swelling, it is a very frightening affliction.

A constant pain in the chest is an absolute reason to schedule a visit with your primary care physician. They will probably schedule tests, such as an Electrocardiography (ECG) or a chest x-ray to rule out other causes of the chest pain, such as a heart attack.

Natural Solutions you can do.

Heat and massage may be an appropriate therapy for Costochondritis. Massage will assist in loosening up the sore muscles around the neck and shoulders that many people with this condition tend to acquire from “hunching over”, because it hurts to breathe.

I find soaking in a warm bath with Epsom Salts relaxing, as your body will absorb the magnesium into the muscles or you could just stand in the shower and let the warm water soothe those hurting muscles.  You can also add magnesium to your diet throughout the day as I do with a wild blue-green algae supplement.  The body will recognize and utilize nutrients when taken as whole foods.

For a constant pain your doctor may also ask you to take a Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAIDs) such as Advil.

For a more natural approach, fish oil has been known to help with inflammation. Omega-3 fatty acids are considered essential fatty acids: They are necessary for human health but the body can’ t make them — you have to get them through food such as  salmon, tuna, and halibut, and other seafood, including algae and krill, some plants, and nut oils.

During research at Harvard University, AFA has been shown to be a significant source of Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids.  In an animal study, treatment with omega-3 fatty acids reduced the risk of ulcers from non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), which include ibuprofen (Motrin or Advil) and naproxen (Aleve or Naprosyn). More research is needed to see whether omega-3 fatty acids would have the same effects in people. I believe they do. (Source: http://ow.ly/fWZnN)

I have been using the wild blue-green algae since 1993 and my pain level has not been as debilitating as I believe it would be if I weren’t consuming the Algae.

I did get to experience the worst during a relapse and am always staying one step ahead with the Algae as my constant ally in my journey living with Fibromyalgia..
